STOP, VENETIA!

Venetia Rack has a brilliant brain
And she loves asking questions again and again.
Questions like “what happens to birds when they sneeze?”
And “how do you know if a spider has knees?”
And ” what makes the Sun shine? Were Dinosaurs pink?”
And ” why is it people frown when they think?”
And ” what noise does a snore make when it goes to sleep?”
And ” how do you explain a woolly scarf to a sheep?”

But her Dad and her Daddy
Her Gran and her Teacher
Are always telling her
“Stop, Venetia!”

At home she asked Dad “what makes oceans blue?”
And then she asks Daddy ” do vegetables poo?”
“Where do candle flames go when they’re blown out on a cake?”
And ” if a cow’s feeling cold does that make a milk shake?”
She asks Gran “do clouds get wet in the rain?”
But Gran tells her “Stop! It’s hurting my brain!
Too many questions from one little girl,
I can’t answer them all, my heads in a whirl!”

So her Dad and her Daddy
Her Gran and her Teacher
Are always telling her
“Stop, Venetia!”

At school she loves reading and learning new things
About Planets and animals, colours and Kings.
But when she asks; “do Mermaids have baths?”
The teachers go ‘Tut’ and the children all laugh.
She wonders aloud “do birthdays have parties
With games and balloons and ice cream and Smarties?”
“Oh stop” sighs her Teacher “I’m really quite busy
And all of these questions are making me dizzy”.

And her Dad and her Daddy
Her Gran and her Teacher
Are always telling her
“Stop, Venetia!”

Then one wonderful day in the Library in town
There’s a book on the shelf that Venetia takes down
It’s called The Queen’s Hat, and she reads it with glee
Thinking “this book is brilliant; it’s perfect for me!”
The Author is Steve, and she writes him a letter
To tell him his book just gets better and better
And she says does he think she should stop asking questions
At home and in school and in all of her lessons?

Because her Dad and her Daddy
Her Gran and her Teacher
Are always telling her
“Stop, Venetia!”

A letter comes back with some words of advice
That says ‘Just you keep asking everything; twice!
The most beautiful thing in the World you can find
Is a clever young child with an inquisitive mind.
Don’t feel ashamed, embarrassed, or shy
Just be yourself and hold your head high.
Forget what your Dads say
Your Gran and your Teacher
NEVER stop asking questions, Venetia’.

So, Venetia Rack and her brilliant brain
Kept on asking questions again and again.
And when she grew up she knew just what to do
Because Venetia Rack is now an Author too…
She makes special books for children, you see
In a place called a University
And if you look hard you might even see her
Writing a book called an Encyclopaedia.

Now her Dad and her Daddy
Her Gran and old Teacher
Are always saying
“We’re so proud, Venetia!”
